Our Mission

Founded in 1994 as part of a national network, City Year Chicago has 242 full-time Student Success Coaches deployed at 28 high-need CPS neighborhood schools who work to reduce the early warning indicators (inconsistent attendance, poor behavior, and struggling in reading and/or math) in grades 3 through 9. Fueled by national service, City Year Chicago recruits, inspires, and mobilizes emerging leaders as Student Success Coaches who empower at-risk Chicago Public School students to reach their highest potential.

Our Impact

  • Students in schools with City Year teams attend 5.6 more days of school. (Chapin Hall, 2017)
  • Students served by City Year receive 1,900 additional instructional hours. (Deloitte, 2017)
  • Schools with City Year experience an 86% decrease in detentions (Brett Consulting, 2012) and 33% fewer suspensions/ expulsions than comparable schools not partnered with City Year. (Chapin Hall, 2017)
  • City Year partner schools are two times as likely to improve on state English assessments, and three times more likely to improve in Math. (Policy Studies Associates, 2015)

“Sullivan has made dramatic gains in our Freshmen On-Track rates in the five years since our City Year partnership began, from 60% to 90%, and we are on a trajectory to hit 93% by the end of this school year. This wouldn’t have happened without City Year.”
