Applying for Food Stamps

We strongly encourage all City Year AmeriCorps members to apply for Food Stamps, also known as SNAP benefits, which helps reduce costs of living while on a stipend. City Year cannot guarantee that you will be awarded any amount in SNAP benefits since we don’t control the approval process. Illinois Department of Human Service (IDHS) is the government agency that will be reviewing your application for these federal benefits, which are ultimately administered by the state. However, we are here to support you in your application process!

How does the application process work?

Illinois Department of Human Services requires AmeriCorps to obtain a personalized food stamp verification letter. You can email our AmeriCorps Member Experience Manager for your personalized letter.

You will need to fill out an application online through DHS and upload your personalized letter as well. If you are approved, they will contact you about any next steps in the process.
